What’s the difference between solid and engineered hardwood flooring?

The two versions of hardwood are solid and engineered. They look similar in appearance, but their construction is different. In humid conditions, they perform very differently. Total House + Flooring is seeing engineered hardwood take a large share of the hardwood market these days.

Different construction

Solid hardwood is a single thickness throughout the plank. Engineered hardwood is layered. At the top of the engineered wood is the veneer layer. This is your species choice layer that can be oak, maple, or cherry. The veneer layer has the same undertones as solid, with quirky knots, burls, and curls in the grain. These planks are a little wider and shorter than solid wood, but the manufacturers offer various sizes to fit your preference.

Underneath the veneer are three, sometimes more, layers of genuine wood that are combined with resin. These are affixed in a crosswise pattern. This construction can give a floor more stability and a better ability to handle water. They can be set in a higher-than-normal moisture area, like a basement, where solid is not recommended. There is no need for an acclimation period since the floor won't shrink or contract. Just like solid hardwood flooring, it adds value to the property. It can also be refinished if needed.

Installation: another difference

With solid hardwood, the method used is tongue and groove. Engineered hardwood offers a different approach, that of a floating floor. This fast and uncomplicated technique has a locking mechanism to it. It's also less expensive than solid installation. The pieces of engineered wood click together, mat, and hover over the subfloor. There is no need for nails or glue. All that is needed is a smooth subfloor that is level, clean, and dry.
